Tips For Models/Actors

Q: How do you get a manager or agent for modeling?
A: The first thing that I would do would be to call an agency and ask if you can get an interview with them. They'll tell you if you're what they're looking for at the moment. Don't get discouraged if one agency turns you down, just keep checking back with them and other agencies, because they're always looking for different looks.

Q: How much do models usually make?
A: For children, models usually make (at minimum) $50/hr. For adults, models usually make (at minimum) $250/hr. Now, this price can change depending on the status of the model (i.e. how popular they are) and there are other things that are taken into consideration. But, models would not be paid under the prices I gave you.

Q: I am not tall enough to be a model, how big is the 'short/petite' model industry?
A: There are two types of models in the modeling industry: Commercial models and runway models. The MINIMUM height for a runway model is about 5'7''. Commercial models, on the other hand, can be any size - commercial models are the people you find in magazines/billboards.

Q: I am 11 years old and I am already 5'8". I want to be a model, but am I too young?
A: Nobody is ever too young to be a model. There are tons of clothing lines out there that are based on kids. For example, you can try modeling for A&F kids, Gap Kids, Old Navy kids, etc. There are tons of opportunities out there for kids!

Q: To be a model does it matter if you haven't got perfectly straight teeth?
A: You don't have to have perfectly straight teeth, but they do have to be "somewhat" in line. For example, I don't think agencies would want crooked, yellowed teeth. But then again, they do realize that everyone doesn't have "perfect" teeth.

Q: Do you feel pressure to diet, or is that not as much of an issue as people make it out to be?
A: I don't really feel pressure to diet. I know what my weight should be and I don't eat things that are unhealthy and that might irritate my skin. I exercise enough that I don't have to worry too much about what I eat.

Q: Is it better to send a couple of pictures to a big agency like in New York / Los Angeles, or is it better to just see a small local agency?
A: It is better to send your pictures to a small local agency. You are more likely to be recognized that way. From there, you can work your way up to the bigger agencies.

Q: Can you still model if you have a bellybutton ring? Does it effect your chances of getting a job?
A: People will probably require you to take out the piercings. Although, if you are doing a shoot that doesn't require the showing of your belly button, you really don't have a problem.

Q: What would you say is the best and easiest way to try and start your modeling career?
A: The best and easiest way to start modeling is to visit reputable agencies. Another way is to get pictures done and send them to local agencies but this can sometimes be expensive.

Q: I want to go to an agency but I am a little overweight. Should I lose weight before I go to an agency, or should I just go in and see what they say?
A: Try to get in shape a little before you go to agency again. For example, do some aerobics tapes and work on toning.

Q: Do you think it is necessary to pay for a modeling school, or have you been able to pick things up along the way?
A: It really depends on what your agency says. The best way is to go to an agency first. They'll tell you what they want you to do.

Q: Do you have to have perfect skin to be a model?
A: Yes, models are required to have AT LEAST close to perfect skin. But everyone knows that nobody's skin is absolutely perfect, so obviously people would expect minor flaws. What I mean by minor flaws is something that can be easily concealed my makeup. If you do have a complexion problem, I would suggest getting straight to your nearest dermatologist. They can really help ya out!

Q: A lot of models say that it isn't an easy job, but it seems like it would be no big deal. What parts of the job are difficult?
A: Modeling is not an easy job. You have to be able to take a lot of criticsism that is constructive but not let it bother you. You also have to work a lot while your friends may be having fun. You might also not be able to be as carefree as your friends. Examples are eating, always wearing sunscreen when you go out, and other little things like that.

Q: Is it hard to be a model? What is a typical work day like for you?
A: Being a model definitely has its drawbacks, I will say that. You always have to make sure that your skin is perfect, you are taking good care of your hair, you eat well and exercise regularly. A typical work day for a model would be to get up, go through his/her daily regimen, and then go on calls. Now they have "open calls" for models in which models can go to the call and the people look at them and then they can ask them back for a second call, and so on. And then a model might go to their shoot for a certain magazine or product (whatever the case may be). If you are a fashion model, you might be doing a runway show that day. It just all depends! There's never just one typical day that a model goes through -- they're all different!

Q: I have heard that when you go in for an interview at an agency, you shouldn't wear any makeup. I think it would be better to wear makeup because you would look prettier. Which is true?
A: Well, it is good to not wear A LOT of makeup when going for an interview. The agency wants to see your skin, and doesn't want it to be covered with a lot of makeup. I would opt for a neutral shade of eye shadow and some powder on your face. Don't go to heavy, though!

Q: What are some of the positive aspects of modeling? I am trying to convince my parents to let me model.
A: Some of the positive aspects of modeling is that you make a good amount of money -- the minimum amount is $50/hr. It is a good way to make a pretty decent amount of money for college, perhaps a new car, etc. Plus, the hours aren't usually that long. It teaches you about responsibility, personal hygiene, and marketing a product (YOU being the product).

Q: I'm not exactly drop-dead gorgeous like most models, but I've noticed that there are some models who are very unique looking. What are the chances of making it if you aren't gorgeous, but have a unique look?
A: It seems that in the modeling industry lately, people are opting for the more "unique" look rather than the overused "gorgeous look".. People are looking for something different -- so there are a lot of chances for people that have a different look to offer.

Q: How tall is the average model and how much does she weigh?
A: For a fashion model, you need to be about 5'8'' and the average weight is between 108-125 lbs. Don't forget though, there are all sorts of modeling. There is also the "real-life" models which are represented in catalogs on t.v. The gray-haired guy in the golf ads is a "real-life" model. You don't have to be perfect to be a model because there are all sorts of modeling that you can get into.

Q: Hi! My name is Becky, and I am 15. This weird thing happened to me. I was in a store shopping and a sales clerk commented on my looks and asked me if I ever thought of modeling. The thought never really crossed my mind until now. How can I get into something like this? How should I prepare? Who should I contact?
A: First of all, you need to get a good agent. A good agent will be responsible for providing bookings. They will also help you through your career, giving you advice on hair and makeup. There are many ways you can try to get an agent. First of all, modeling agencies have something called an "open call" in which they welcome people to come in to their agency that are interested in modeling. They suggest dressing casually in form-hugging clothing and keeping the makeup to a minimum. Another thing I would recommend is visiting www.modelsandtalent.com, a website in which model scouts browse through. You can also post your electronic profile so agents can check you out. Good luck! :)
